Who We Are
CM Decorating is Corey McQuillan's painting and decorating business, based in Christchurch and working the whole of Canterbury. Corey has been painting for over 13 years - interiors, exteriors and roofs - and the business is built the way a one-owner trade business should be: the person who quotes the job is the person who does it, and the same phone number works before, during and after.
This website is the roof painting side of that business. Roof painting is a job of its own - different preparation, different products, spray application, and a surface that gets more weather than any other part of the house - and enough of our work is roofs now that it deserved its own place. Interior and exterior painting have not gone anywhere; they are on cm-decorating.co.nz.
How We Work
Every roof starts with Corey on the roof. Not a price per square metre over the phone, because that number is worth nothing until someone has seen how much moss there is, how many screws have rusted, whether the old coating is chalking or peeling, and how the scaffold or the ladder is going to go. Then a written quote that names the product and the colour and says what is included.
The work itself is mostly preparation. Drop sheets down, the roof washed, the moss and mould treated with a biocide so it dies rather than growing back under the paint, rust treated and primed, bare steel etch-primed, tile roofs sealed. Then two coats of a proper roof coating by airless spray, on dry days, with drying time between them. That is what makes a roof last ten to fifteen years rather than three.

Honest About What Painting Can and Cannot Do
A coating seals a roof, protects the steel or the tile, and makes the house look new. It does not fix a roof that has rusted through, and it does not stop a leak that is coming from a failed flashing or a cracked tile. When the inspection finds something like that, Corey says so and tells you whether it is a painter's job or a roofer's. Painting over a problem is how a cheap quote becomes an expensive one.

Roof painting in Christchurch City
The bulk of our work. Post-war corrugated iron in Linwood, Spreydon and Shirley that has been painted three or four times already; concrete tile from the 70s and 80s across Bishopdale, Avonhead and Parklands; and newer Colorsteel roofs on the rebuild-era houses that are now due their first repaint.
Roof painting in Kaiapoi, Woodend and Pegasus
Just north of the Waimakariri and close to the coast, so roofs here cope with salt off Pegasus Bay as well as the nor'west sun. A lot of long-run roofs on 1990s and 2000s houses that have faded to chalk on the northern face while the southern face still looks new.

North Canterbury's main town, with everything from villas and 1960s bungalows in the older streets to whole subdivisions of Colorsteel roofs on the edges. Inland enough to get hard frosts, so the sealing of tile roofs matters more here than by the sea.

Selwyn's growth towns, where most roofs are Colorsteel from the last twenty years and are coming up to their first repaint at the same time. Flat, open country with nothing to break the nor'wester, which is hard on the north-facing slope of every roof.

Further inland on the plains, with more frost, more hail and a fair amount of dust in a dry summer. Farmhouses, older iron roofs and long low sheds - a different job to a suburban roof, and one we do regularly.

Salt is the story on the coast and around the harbours. Iron roofs at Sumner, Diamond Harbour and Lyttelton rust from the cut edges and the fixings first, so the rust treatment and the primer are where the time goes before any colour goes on.

Are you a roofing company?
No - we are painters, and roof painting is one of the things we do best. We clean, prepare and coat roofs. We do not replace roofs, and if yours needs a roofer rather than a painter we will tell you.
Do you do the work yourselves?
Yes. CM Decorating is owner operated. Corey quotes the roof and Corey is on the roof doing the work.
Do you also paint houses?
Yes - interiors and exteriors, across Christchurch and Canterbury. That side of the business is on cm-decorating.co.nz. If you want the roof and the house done together, say so when you ring and Corey will quote both.
Where are you based?
Christchurch, and we work the whole of Canterbury - north to Kaiapoi, Rangiora and Amberley, west to Rolleston and Darfield, round the coast to Sumner and Banks Peninsula, and south to Ashburton.
