One Region, Three Different Kinds of Weather
Canterbury looks flat and simple on a map and behaves like three places when it comes to roofs. Near the coast - Sumner, New Brighton, Kaiapoi, Pegasus - it is salt, which gets into the cut edges and fixings of a metal roof and starts rust that has nothing to do with the coating. On the plains it is the nor'wester: hot, dry, and hard on the north-facing slope of every roof, which chalks out years before the south side does. Inland towards Darfield and the foothills it is frost and hail, which is what breaks up an unsealed concrete tile.
The job changes with the address, and so does what Corey looks for at the inspection. A coastal iron roof gets more time on rust treatment and priming. A tile roof in Rangiora gets a sealer coat that matters more there than it would at the beach. That is why we ask where the house is before we quote, and why the quote is done on the roof and not over the phone.

The bulk of our work. Post-war corrugated iron in Linwood, Spreydon and Shirley that has been painted three or four times already; concrete tile from the 70s and 80s across Bishopdale, Avonhead and Parklands; and newer Colorsteel roofs on the rebuild-era houses that are now due their first repaint.
Roof painting in Kaiapoi, Woodend and Pegasus
Just north of the Waimakariri and close to the coast, so roofs here cope with salt off Pegasus Bay as well as the nor'west sun. A lot of long-run roofs on 1990s and 2000s houses that have faded to chalk on the northern face while the southern face still looks new.

North Canterbury's main town, with everything from villas and 1960s bungalows in the older streets to whole subdivisions of Colorsteel roofs on the edges. Inland enough to get hard frosts, so the sealing of tile roofs matters more here than by the sea.

Selwyn's growth towns, where most roofs are Colorsteel from the last twenty years and are coming up to their first repaint at the same time. Flat, open country with nothing to break the nor'wester, which is hard on the north-facing slope of every roof.

Further inland on the plains, with more frost, more hail and a fair amount of dust in a dry summer. Farmhouses, older iron roofs and long low sheds - a different job to a suburban roof, and one we do regularly.

Salt is the story on the coast and around the harbours. Iron roofs at Sumner, Diamond Harbour and Lyttelton rust from the cut edges and the fixings first, so the rust treatment and the primer are where the time goes before any colour goes on.

Amberley, Leithfield and up to Waipara and Cheviot. Older rural housing, plenty of corrugate, and a longer run for us that we plan for - so if you are out this way, ring and we will group it with other work nearby.

South across the Rakaia. Ashburton, Methven, Rakaia and the farms between them. Big roofs, dry summers and cold winters; we come down for the right job and the quote is free just the same.
How Far Do You Go?
Christchurch and everything within about half an hour of it is our patch and we are there every week - the city and its suburbs, Kaiapoi, Rangiora, Woodend, Pegasus, Rolleston, Lincoln, Prebbleton, Templeton, and round the coast to Sumner and Lyttelton.
Darfield, Amberley, Leithfield, Diamond Harbour and Akaroa are a longer run and we do them regularly, usually grouping jobs in the same direction. Ashburton, Methven, Rakaia and up towards Waipara and Cheviot we come out for the right job, and the quote is free just the same. If you are further out than that, ring anyway. It costs nothing to ask and for a decent sized roof we will travel.
The Roofs We See Most, Town by Town
- Christchurch city. Everything. Post-war corrugated iron that has been painted several times already, concrete tile from the 70s to the 90s, decramastic on the houses of that era, and rebuild-era Colorsteel now due its first repaint.
- Kaiapoi, Rangiora and Woodend. Long-run and Colorsteel on the newer subdivisions, older iron in the original streets, and salt in the air the closer you get to Pegasus Bay.
- Rolleston, Lincoln and Prebbleton. Mostly Colorsteel from the last twenty years, all fading at roughly the same rate on the same slope.
- Sumner, Redcliffs and the harbours. Iron roofs and salt. Rust treatment and primer are most of the job.
- Darfield and the plains. Farmhouses, older iron, and long shed roofs in dry, dusty, frosty conditions.
